Mississippi State University Science Education at Sea (MSU-SEAS) Program
Adam Skarke and Jonathan Harris co-developed the Mississippi State University Science Education at Sea (MSU_SEAS) outreach program in 2020. It is an immersive marine science education experience for grade 6-12 students led by researchers (Rudzin, Turnage, Dyer) from Mississippi State University in partnership with the Mississippi Aquariumand the Northern Gulf Institute(A NOAA cooperative institute). The program takes place on vessels in the Mississippi Sound and within the Gulf Islands National Seashore. The program includes opportunities for participating students to conduct hands-on marine science data collection, learn about oceanographic research conducted by MSU and Mississippi Aquarium scientists, and explore career pathways in marine-focused STEM fields. Since its inception, the program has occurred 2-4 times a year and served hundred of young people from Mississippi and surrounding states.
